Wiltshire horn rams

Thankfully we’re back into gorgeous crisp autumn days, so much kinder on the farm animals than those blisteringly hot days of our long dry summers. It’s been an exceptionally busy period for us down on the farm, what with starting up our organic meat sales at the weekly Matakana farmers market at the beginning of February, a trade stand showcasing our Wiltshire Horn rams at the Northland Field Days in early March, as well as all our usual summer livestock sales culminating in widespread ram sales for the tupping season. We sent rams down to the south island and the lower north island again this year to both commercial breeders and to lifestylers, and we’ll be profiling one of these customers later in this farmchat update. Also in this edition, as well as our livestock round-up and how to get your hands on our mouth-wateringly delicious organic meat, we will be giving you a bit of a profile of our newest member of staff who’s come all the way from the UK to work with us here.

Organic Lamb Freezer boxes

In addition to our Saturday morning (8am-1pm) farmers market at Matakana, at which we sell fresh lamb and hogget cuts, gourmet sausages and salamis, we have the very welcome news of organic lamb freezer boxes now also available by delivery to customers in the (old) Rodney area as well as Auckland North shore . We have these available in three different styles; de-luxe with those special cuts for entertaining; economy for everyday meals, specially geared towards kids preferences; and an in between pack with some of each for the everyday and for those special weekend meals. For the variety of cuts in each style of pack, prices, and details for ordering and delivery click on the Organic lamb Freezer boxes tab on the menu. We can’t as yet offer our meat any farther afield but if you live in Auckland and sometimes come up to the Matakana market on a Saturday morning you can pre-order and collect from us there. All our lamb and hogget is from our incredibly lean and tender Wiltshire Horn or Arapawa sheep

Wiltshire Horn rams

We do still have rams available for those late tupping this year (April onwards), we have two-tooths and older still looking for ladies. Send us your requirements and we will do our best to find a good match. Ewes or ewe lambs won’t be available until next spring/summer, but can be reserved now. We had a lot of interest on our stand at the Dargaville Field days which we shared with the Northland Red Devon cattle society, and the big boys we took up were as placid and laid-back as expected, even though straight out of the paddock- never been in a trailer or pen before. Their quiet intelligence when it came to loading each evening was a source of much admiration, as were their magnificent heads, close shed coats, solid meaty frames, and wet-hardy feet.

One commercial breeder, now in Canterbury, who has experienced the benefits of our top-quality organic rams previously and who came back for another this year, is Ian Simister, and this is his sheep tale…

“In 2001 having time to think for 7 days in hospital, following heart surgery, I realised that directly or indirectly, wool was causing me around 70% of my work for about 8% of nett income, on our steep 2,700 acre Murchison farm.

I rang John Morrison, one of the major breeders of Wiltshires in N.Z. who informed me that:
- all N.Z. Wiltshires, both horned and polled descended from one pure Wiltshire horned ram and 4 Wiltshire/polled Dorset cross breed ewes, imported from Australia in 1972.
- Australia had good numbers of Wiltshire Horns, descended from a relatively small gene pool. A polled version (Wiltipol) was being developed there.
- In England the breed’s stronghold in the Salisbury area had been decimated in the past by an outbreak of foot and mouth leaving the breed very short on genetics.
I bought 6 ram lambs from him and mated them to 600 Perendale ewes, keeping the resulting ewe lambs as foundation breeding stock. Over the years I have sourced rams and contacted breeders nationwide, and been alarmed to find breeders happy to continue breeding from this limited source, often with closed flocks.

I have noticed an increasing, unacceptable mortality rate, in all classes of stock, as well as deformities, and have been keen to source any new invigorating genetics, starting with a pure horned Australian ram from Bev Trowbridge in 2005. This ram really improved shedding, and although smaller than usual, left impressive, larger stock with very few horns.

Last year I chanced on some imported Australian Wiltipol semen, from 2 rams and A.I d some top ewes producing 21 lambs. These Aussie rams were top performers from a large recorded flock ( like S.I.L ) and their lambs have impressive growth rates, but need some improvement shedding.

To help with this I have purchased another ram from Bev and am rapidly producing a new strain, of polled Wiltshires, with as much as 7/8 Australian blood, to use with my commercial ewes.

I have started recording a stud with S.I.L and will start scanning this year. I appreciate the rams I’ve had from Bev so far and hope to continue this process in the future.”

Our rams find favour with polled as well as horned Wiltshire breeders looking to improve the genetics of their flocks.

Tamworth/Large Black piglets

We only have a small number of piglets still available from our most recent litter as many were pre-sold. We currently have three baby boars and one sow left, so get in quick! They are fast-growing chunky little piglets with plenty of hybrid vigour from this cross which is one of our favourites for vigour, temperament and taste.

Red Devon Weaner Steers

We are selling a small number of well-grown weaner steers this autumn to discerning buyers. These steers are certified organic and so are highly suitable for anyone growing or rearing organic beef cattle and looking for quality steers to take through, or for lifestylers looking to grow their own organic beef.

Assistant Farm Manager- Andrew Robinson

Andrew came out from the UK to join us here on the farm in October last year and is settling in to our kiwi farming ways, including our mineral deficient soils and hot dry summers- and next the long wet! Andrew came with his partner Fi from south-east England where they had been working for several years on a certified organic beef and sheep farm using heritage breeds and selling the produce through farmers markets and a farm shop; and latterly he was the livestock manager for a wildlife trust in Kent using heritage breeds to manage wildlife habitat through grazing. Exactly the kind of roles I’ve always advocated for these older breeds of livestock which tend to have lots of qualities, attributes and uses that have become lost in modern commercial hybrids and breed types. Andrew has been a huge asset in helping us to launch our meat sales this year and his experience will stand us in good stead through this early period of getting our sales established and bedded in.

Eventually Andrew and Fi hope to settle in NZ and to have farm of their own, no doubt with heritage breeds too!

A little hello from Andrew:

"I'm really enjoying it here in NZ. It has been quite challenging adjusting to working in the harsher farming environment here than I've been used to in the UK, but I am now settling in nicely. It's great to still be working with heritage breed livestock and applying my previous experience, and I hope to be here for some time to come."

More from Andrew in later editions of Farmchat..
